What Is Internet Radio?

Asking What Is Internet Radio? really covers two ideas. It describes stations that stream their programmes through the internet rather than over FM, and it also names the devices built to play those streams, often sold as Wi-Fi radios.

Such a device can take the place of the classic kitchen radio. Most come with a built-in list of stream addresses, and some also receive FM and DAB+. Once online, they open up a huge choice of programmes.

The catch is that stations may disappear from the device if its list is no longer updated. You do not actually need special hardware, though, because apps and websites give free access to the same stations and usually make it easier to search for them and learn about what is playing.
