Internet radio, also known as web radio, refers to stations that broadcast via streaming over the internet instead of using traditional FM frequencies. It can also mean a device designed to receive and play these streams—often called a WiFi radio.
An internet radio device can replace a traditional kitchen radio. Most models come with a built-in database of stream URLs and sometimes include FM and DAB+ transmitters. Once connected to the internet, they offer a wide range of programs.
However, if the database stops updating, some stations might become unavailable. The good news is that you don’t necessarily need a dedicated internet radio device—many apps and websites provide free access to the same variety of stations. Plus, apps often make it easier to search and learn more about what you’re listening to.
